Editorial Policies

Language
Journal content must be published in English or Te Reo Māori. Where requested by the author, abstracts may be translated (by the author or at their cost) in an additional language.

Editorial Board
The Editorial Board must consist of at least 5 appropriately qualified members, from at least three New Zealand-based institutions. The required qualifications are:

  • The possession of a first degree in a relevant field; and

  • The possession of an honours or master’s degree in a relevant field; and

  • The status of postgraduate enrolment in a programme greater than NZCQF Level 8 in a relevant field, unless circumstances warrant exception.

Advisory Board
The journal must have an academic advisory group consisting of members from at least four institutions, at least two members of which must hold a PhD or equivalent qualification in relevant fields.

Editorial Review
Articles submitted to the journal must be unpublished and not under consideration by any other platform at the time of submission and throughout the submission process. Articles must be original and have appropriate authorship.

All research articles will undergo a double-blind editor review process, in which the authors and the reviewers are unaware of each others’ identity. Research articles will be reviewed by two reviewers with relevant qualifications, aiming to complete the review within four weeks. The journal aims to complete the entire process, from review to final decision, within six weeks.

Reviews, critical notes, and invited features may undergo editorial review. The journal aims to complete these reviews within two weeks and may, on request by an author, expedite the process in submission of a particularly timely piece.

Complaints
Any person may make a complaint to the Editor-in-Chief alleging misconduct. Complaints may be brought at any time pre-, inter-, or post-publication. The Editor-in-Chief will assemble an ad hoc committee of at least three members to discuss the initial merits of the complaint and what, if any, steps will be taken next.

Schedule
The journal will publish an annual publication of at least 5 open access research articles but may, on majority approval by the editorial board, increase the publication rate in any given year.

ISSN
The journal will apply for an ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) from the National Library of New Zealand, and must display this number on the website.

Article Processing Charges
The journal will not charge authors fees for any stage of the submission or online publication process. The journal may charge authors a fee for a printed edition of the issue their article appears in, should they request one.

Endogeny
Articles to which an Editor or Reviewer is an author may be considered for publication in the journal, provided that publication of these articles does not exceed 25% in any two consecutive issues.

Digital Archival
Each issue will, upon website publication, be deposited by the journal in the Internet Archive for digital preservation in perpetuity.

Self-Archival
Authors are permitted to deposit any and all versions of their paper - including the preprint, accepted manuscript, or published article (Version of Record) - in an institutional or subject repository. Authors may not place an embargo period on their paper.

Article Identifiers
Each article will be allocated a unique article identifier in the form of a DOI. The journal will continuously register and resolve DOIs through the Zenodo platform.

Metadata
Article metadata will be regularly uploaded to the Directory of Open Access Journals.

Licensing
Authors must agree to a Creative Commons Attribution International license (CC BY-NC-ND) which “requires that reusers give credit to the creator. It allows reusers to copy and distribute the material in any medium or format in unadapted form and for noncommercial purposes only” (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/deed.en). The license will be displayed on all full text article formats.

Copyright and Publishing Rights
Authors will retain unrestricted copyright and publishing rights when publishing under any license permitted by the journal.
